The three women formed JAK Native, Inc., in 2007 to share an exciting discovery with you – an exotic and indulgent chocolate beverage made from roasted and ground cacao with origins dating back to the ancient Mayans. Their discovery makes a fascinating story. ![]() Abby Abby, a yoga instructor and nutritionist, is always on the lookout for healthy alternatives. While traveling in Central America in 2006, Abby tasted an enchanting drink made from the beans of the cacao tree and something magical happened. She noticed the chocolate beverage gave her an even and lasting energy and also satisfied her snack cravings. She felt great! So Abby began to mix her own version of the concoction and drank it every day. ![]() Karel When Abby returned to the United States, she couldn’t wait to share her delicious find with her friend Karel. Sure enough, it was love at first taste. Karel, a vegetarian with a background in Ayurvedic cooking, felt the drink gave her more clarity, focus, and energy, and thought it would make a great morning or afternoon snack. She too was eager to share the experience with others, and decided to take samples to a nearby horse barn where she rides. Everyone who tasted it clamored for more. The kids who tried it even offered to bring in money the next day so they could buy more of the drink. Abby and Karel realized they were on to something. ![]() Jane The two women then made the cacao mixture for their friend Jane, and discussed the possibility of developing the drink commercially. Jane had been in the healthcare and wellness industries for over twenty years and just like her friends, was always looking for new and healthier choices. She and her teenage daughter tasted the drink and were instantly hooked. That sealed the deal. The business was born. Over the next two years, the trio worked on improving and refining their drink formulation to bring the best possible product to market. They chose organic, natural, and dairy-free ingredients; included delicious spices and selected environmentally-friendly, biodegradable Tetra Pak for drink containers. But Jane, Abby, and Karel struggled to name their chocolate drink. The choice had to be special, and while there were many suggestions, none of them felt quite right. Then one morning, Abby awoke from a dream with the name Mayesa on her lips. She grabbed the telephone and called Jane and Karel. They all agreed. Mayesa was it. Now Jane, Abby, and Karel are excited to finally share Mayesa with you.
